Why does Ha love papaya so much? What might the fruit represent for her? How is that the same as or different from what the chick means for Brother Khoi?

  1. I think Ha loves papaya so much because it’s what she grew up around. She planted her papaya tree when she was young and watched it grow. “I will be the first to witness its ripening.” The fruit might represent her life. As the fruits get bigger her life becomes more difficult and full of new challenges. Her papayas mean everything to her. This is the same as what the chick means for Brother Khoi. “We are not to leave. I must protect my chicks.” These objects are their own to bring up with love and to cherish. They can love an cherish these things the way they wish their father could have cherished and loved them.
