Blog #1 - The Catcher in the Rye

What does Holden most often criticize people for? (Hint: he's got a certain word for it.) Why is this specific criticism that Holden uses against other people ironic? Explain. (2 paragraphs - quote the book.)

  1. Holden most often criticizes people for being phony. Holden criticizes old Mr. Spencer for using the word grand. He says that grand is a phony word.“Grand. There’s a word I really hate. It’s a phony.” He really dislikes the word phony. He also hints that his former school Pencey Prep. “They advertise in about a thousand magazines, always showing some hot shot guy on a horse jumping over a fence. I never even once saw a horse, anywhere near that place.” Little things like this really frustrate him.
This specific criticism that Holden uses against other people is ironic because he is a bit phony himself. He holds back on what he is thinking, and uses excuses for the truth. For example when Mrs. Spencer asks how he is. Holden replies, “Fine.” He isn’t actually fine, he is getting kicked out of school for not being detected enough and bad grades. He also doesn’t tell the 100% truth. Like the fencing match he told old Mr. Spencer about. Earlier in the book, he tells the reader he never even really got to the match.
