The dog shows love as symbolism between the girl and grandma it was shown as the small bond between the two. Then as the story progressed the idea that the grandmother sacrificed the dog she loved so much for the girl shows the love and connection the two have beneath the bitter discontent as well as the girl admired and respected the grandmother for her actions. Sylvia is essential to the story because she establishes the connection between the girl and the grandmother. She portrays and explains the damaged relationship between the two of them. She also provides the backstory for why the grandmother and her father are so protective. It is also explained the girls wild child traits are inherited By her mother.
