The grandmother is portrayed as a bitter older woman. In reality she is wise and very straightforward. She is a no nonsense kind of woman she is not easily threatened and persuaded. She is damaged and that becomes more and more apparent as the story goes by. She also is a sweet carding and kind woman under the bravado she portrays.
