Blog #1 - Cathedral

1. Like with the word 'snow' from "White Angel", think about what the word 'cathedral' evokes for you. Write a list of 7 words on a piece of loose leaf paper.

2. What does a cathedral symbolize in the framework of this story? Why a cathedral and not another building, for example? What does this add to the story and to the narrator's experience at the end? (1 paragraph - use 2 quotes from the story in your answer.)

  1. The Cathidral symbolizes many things in this story and its a real turning point. The main character of the story has a really negative view of the blind man before he comes and he says “a blind man in my house is not something I looked forward too.” The man still has a negative attitude towards the blind man when he arrives but as he observes him it starts to change. When they are both watching tv the blind man asks the man to describe a cathedral and the man simply cant do it. Saying things like “it’s very tall” and being at a loss for words. Its not until the blind man makes him take a step back and draw the cathedral with his eyes closed that he starts to see. The cathedral symbolizes imagination and that what you can create in your head can be just as interesting as what you see in front of you. Once he is drawing he starts to be able to see every detail of the cathedral which he didn’t before. He was put in the position of the blind man and chose to keep his eyes closed.
